Research Projects
It is intended that this page should have a list of ongoing projects on various bird species in the county and who to report sightings to. As far as is possible we will also try to give some feedback here as to what the findings were so that you can see the value of your sightings.
The BTO is looking for volunteers to conduct a survey of breeding Nightingales across the UK. Bedfordshires's BTO representative, Nigel Willits, has written an article outlining details of the Nightingale Survey 2012 inviting Bedfordshire Birdclub members to participate in this important project.
The details of this project have now been moved to Bedfordshire Breeding Bird Atlas which also has details of the BTO survey work. All news will be published there.
These popular surveys have run in summer and winter for many years now and the data from them is analyzed twice a year in The Hobby. The current form can be downloaded from the link below. The file is in .pdf format. Please Print it off, fill it in and then post it off to Barry Nightingale once completed.
The results of the winter 2009/10 survey can be read in the September 2010 issue of the Hobby.
A tabular summary of the results can be downloaded here.
The results of the summer 2010 survey can be read in the January 2011 issue of the Hobby.
